John Nikolai, President of the Motor Mill Foundation, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023 at his home. In 2000, when the Clayton County Supervisors held listening posts throughout the county to get ideas for future growth, John offered a vision for the potential development of the Motor Mill as a historical tourist destination.
He was a founding member of the Motor Mill Advisory Committee established in 2002, and he later served as President of the Motor Mill Foundation (serving as president for nearly two decades). John was tireless in his efforts to help shape and improve the restoration of the Motor Mill. He had a passion for architecture and economic development. He was quick to research an idea and come up with a plan to keep projects moving forward. John leaves behind an impressive legacy at Motor Mill.
In addition to his work at Motor Mill, John served the community on several committees holding active leadership roles. A few of these include his work with the Clayton County Historic Preservation Commission, St. Joseph’s Knights of Columbus, Elkader American Legion Post, and many more volunteer efforts. John was instrumental in coordinating the Stone Structures inventory of Clayton County.
John and his wife, Mary Fran, moved to Clayton County from the Chicago suburbs in April 1997. Originally from Moline, IL., John had a career in water transportation. He became aware of Northeast Iowa when he managed a barge terminal and scrapyard on French Island in LaCrosse, WI in the 1970’s.
John will be greatly missed by many friends. His funeral arrangements are to be held this Saturday, February 18, 2023. Visitation is scheduled from 9:00 am to 9:50 am with funeral to follow at 10:00 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa.
